Fantasy football: 5 49ers players to consider using in Week 8 vs. Cardinals
By Peter Panacy
We’re at that point in the fantasy football season where you’ll need some fliers to win your leagues, and the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 8 matchup versus the Arizona Cardinals helps.
Thanks to a 1-6 season, few fantasy football owners are considering anyone from the San Francisco 49ers or Arizona Cardinals, who both boast the NFL’s worst record heading into Week 8.
Outside tight end George Kittle or running back Matt Breida, there aren’t exactly a lot of favorable options from the Niners’ fantasy perspective. And the Cardinals, who are rolling out a rookie quarterback in Josh Rosen, arguably have even fewer choices for owners.
But fantasy football is at that point in the season where you’ll need some coverage to help get you through that crucial midway point of the year. Bye weeks are in full force, and there have been more than a handful of key injuries to starting-caliber players.
Chances are, you’ve already scoured the waiver wire to find fill-in options to help you navigate this tricky spot in your league’s calendar.
Thankfully, especially because of how bad Arizona is, Week 8’s NFC West bout between the 49ers and Cardinals provides fantasy football owners a chance to grab some much-needed help. Or at least bank on some promising output by possible starters like Kittle and Breida.
So let’s bout that up from San Francisco’s perspective, looking at five fantasy football options from the red and gold in Week 8.
Starting off with the most obvious, Kittle.
No. 5: Tight End George Kittle
If you are already a Kittle owner in fantasy, there’s little reason to sit him for this bout.
Kittle is already the No. 4 scoring option among tight ends, according to ESPN standard-scoring systems. He has 98.7 fantasy points on the year in points-per-reception (PPR) leagues and has only two weeks this year in which he’s failed to reach 10 such points (Weeks 2 and 6). And the last time Kittle and the 49ers matched up against the Cardinals, Kittle managed five catches for 83 yards — 13.3 points on the week.
Arizona has allowed just 39.5 fantasy points to tight ends this season, so it’s safe to say the defense has done a good job there.
But Kittle has already proven he can be effective against good defenses already.
So if you’re having any hesitation about starting Kittle, get rid of that thought as soon as possible.
