Quarterback. Oregon. Justin Herbert. 2. player. 31.

The New York Giants elected to go with running back Saquon Barkley in last year’s NFL Draft, which meant passing on one of the many Round 1 signal-callers to eventually be the heir apparent to the veteran, Eli Manning.

Barkley has been a stud, no doubt. But by passing on a quarterback, the Giants were taking an enormous gamble on Manning being able to produce effectively this season and beyond.

It hasn’t worked.

Granted, Manning hasn’t had the best offensive line to work behind. But he’s also not making the kinds of plays he used to just a short while ago.

So New York elects to go with Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert isn’t the best player in this draft, and some may argue he’s not even the best quarterback. But a smart guess would be him rising in stock value as the year draws on, ending up the first signal-caller taken in Round 1.

By doing so, the Giants get their next franchise guy under center.
