2019 NFL Draft: Early Round 1 mock for all 32 teams across the league
By Peter Panacy
Niner Noise takes an early look at a Round 1 2019 NFL Draft mock, which would include the San Francisco 49ers getting the No. 1 overall pick this upcoming April.
Like it or not, the San Francisco 49ers are projected to get the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft right now.
This, after head coach Kyle Shanahan’s squad lost a heartbreaker — a 33-30 defeat at the hands of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.
It’s not the scenario most Niners fans envisioned this season, particularly before quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending ACL injury back in Week 3.
But Garoppolo helped mask a number of problems San Francisco had entering this season. The team is still short an edge rusher, a starting-caliber cornerback, depth at safety and could use a true impact wide receiver.
Niner Noise has already dished out a 49ers-specific mock NFL Draft, which would have changed now that San Francisco is projected to secure the top pick. But with the season awash for the Niners and a number of other bottom-dwelling teams, let’s have some early fun and mock out the full first round for all 32 teams.
Starting off with San Francisco, who is now on the clock.
One of the biggest problems the 49ers have faced this season is the lack of an outside pass rush. Instead of addressing this need during last year’s offseason, the Niners instead elected to go with Cassius Marsh as the primary pass-rushing EDGE.
It hasn’t worked. Marsh has just one sack on the season.
To compound the issue, the 49ers experimented with putting 2017 first-round draft pick, Solomon Thomas, as this edge spot on base downs. That hasn’t worked either, and Thomas has seen his snap count decrease with regularity this season. It might be time to admit the mistake and move on.
So, with the first pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, the 49ers grab the best pass-rusher from this year’s draft, Ohio State’s Nick Bosa.
Bosa won’t return to Ohio State after suffering an abdominal injury. He’ll instead prepare for the draft, and this injury hasn’t changed Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller’s opinion on him being the best player in this year’s class:
For a team needing impact playmakers on defense right away, Bosa would be more than smart for San Francisco.
