The 2018 NFL trade deadline takes place on Oct. 30, meaning the rebuilding San Francisco 49ers should explore shipping off talent to stockpile NFL Draft picks in 2019.

Trades don’t happen all too frequently at the NFL level. Yet the buildup to the NFL trade deadline is always filled with anticipation and wonder.

Heck, the San Francisco 49ers landed a pretty good trade this time a year ago, acquiring quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots for just a second-round NFL Draft pick. Despite Garoppolo’s season-ending ACL injury this year, that transaction is looking like an absolute steal for San Francisco.

The 2018 NFL trade deadline is Oct. 30 of this year, and all teams have to have their transactions registered with the league’s office by 4 p.m. ET.

Sitting at 1-4 five weeks into the season, the Niners aren’t exactly looking at a deep trip into the playoffs. As soon as Garoppolo was hurt, this year became more about continuing the rebuild and less about realistically winning as many games as possible.

And there are still many ways general manager John Lynch and Co. can improve the roster.

Armed with just five picks in the 2019 NFL Draft (a fifth-round selection was used in the 2017 trade for offensive guard Laken Tomlinson, while a seventh rounder was shipped off to acquire offensive tackle Shon Coleman), Lynch could afford to ship off commodities not likely viewed as long-term pieces to this glaringly large 49ers puzzle.

Keep in mind, trades have to benefit both parties. It’s unlikely, perhaps close to impossible, we see the Niners execute more than one of the listed transactions before the Oct. 30 NFL trade deadline.

Perhaps none at all.

But if we were Lynch, we’d at least explore the market on these five candidates.

Let’s take a look.
