Erik Lambert, NFL Mocks — EDGE Montez Sweat, Mississippi State

Our friend Erik Lambert over at FanSided’s NFL Mocks envisions a trade between the 49ers and the Oakland Raiders, with San Francisco dropping out of the No. 3 overall selection to No. 6 and acquiring a couple of other draft selections in the process.

With that sixth-overall pick, the Niners land Mississippi State EDGE Montez Sweat.

Here’s what Lambert had to say about the selection:

"The San Francisco 49ers defense is having all sorts of issues, and most of them stem from problems up front. Their pass rush has not been getting the job done. Former 1st round pick Solomon Thomas hasn’t been able to elevate his game to the next level. Only DeForest Buckner has been a consistent presence and teams can control one man far easier. Montez Sweat will change that situation. This kid is an exciting prospect. He’s got speed and explosiveness off the edge coupled with long arms and power to shed blocks. As his arsenal of moves has improved, it’s become harder and harder to stop him."

Following up a 10.5-sack campaign his junior year, Sweat has absolutely been on fire his senior season. Through just six games, Sweat is well on pace to surpass last year’s total with an astounding eight sacks.

Sweat is a true edge bender, which San Francisco needs. He combines both speed, a good variety of pass-rushing moves and the ability to get off from the snap with great acceleration.

While he has all the tangible traits one would like, Sweat does come with some red flags, which led to him leaving Michigan State after 2015.
