San Francisco 49ers: Top 5 positional needs for 2019 offseason
By Peter Panacy
No. 4: Wide Receiver
Here’s a stat figure from SFGate.com’s Eric Branch that might hurt some San Francisco fans:
That’s through five weeks. Only two 49ers receivers, Pierre Garçon and Trent Taylor, have over 100 receiving yards on the season. Garçon is the only one remotely close to 200 yards too, so even that number isn’t all that impressive.
Granted, a series of injuries to No. 1 wideout, the speedster Marquise Goodwin, haven’t helped matters at all this year. Neither has a knee injury for rookie wideout Dante Pettis.
Still, the 49ers lack that bona fide top-tier receiver opponents have to scheme against — the kind of player capable of drawing attention from opposing secondaries, therefore opening up chances for complementary targets.
This isn’t to say a wide receiver would win San Francisco a Super Bowl alone.
But one sure would help the team get there.
