No. 3: Free Safety

Earlier this year, fans weren’t too concerned about the 49ers’ safety situation entering 2018. After all, there was a young and promising tandem between Jaquiski Tartt and second-year pro Adrian Colbert.

Sounded good, right? After all, both Tartt and Colbert had breakout years a season ago.

Tartt hasn’t been problematic, per se. But Colbert’s efforts in 2018 have been less than ideal. According to Pro Football Focus, Colbert is allowing opposing quarterbacks to post a 158.3 passer rating when targeting him.

That’s a perfect rating, by the way.

Before the season began, Niner Noise broke down why Colbert’s efforts in 2018 would be a critical X-factor for San Francisco’s Cover 3 success under defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. So far, those results haven’t been pretty.

And if you’re still not sure, just watch Colbert take a horribly bad angle on this Week 5 touchdown allowed here.

Maybe John Lynch just decides to go “all in” on injured Seattle Seahawks free safety Earl Thomas this offseason.
