49ers 2019 mock NFL Draft: Assessing team needs over all 7 rounds
By Peter Panacy
*Remember, this is the phantom pick.
The 49ers’ interior offensive line depth was something that was tested in Week 1 of the regular season, particularly after losing offensive guards Mike Person and Joshua Garnett to foot injuries.
Second-year pro Erik Magnuson is being groomed to hold the uber-lineman role in San Francisco’s offense, which is fine. But Garnett’s status with the team beyond this season is in doubt, and Person is signed only through 2018.

One might expect the Niners to re-sign Person at some point between now and 2019 (he appears to be a Kyle Shanahan favorite), but that doesn’t exactly answer the 49ers’ depth concerns here.
At 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, Nebraska’s Tanner Farmer is a nice option to close out the Niners’ draft efforts. He’s versatile, being able to play both center and guard, and Farmer also moves well — another must-have trait for Shanahan’s outside-zone offensive scheme.
Here’s what 24-7 Sports’ Brian Christopherson had to say about Farmer last June:
"We also think he just might wed perfectly with this fast-paced offense of [Nebraska head coach] Scott Frost’s that asks its O-linemen to show they can move their feet and get out in space. Remember, Farmer is a guy who once spent an offseason grinding with the Husker wrestling team to get in better conditioning."
It looks as if Farmer has both the movement skills and versatility to lock down a underrated spot on San Francisco’s depth chart. And if his trajectory rises at the NFL level, he might be able to take over for one of the interior positions at some point down the line.
The 2019 NFL Draft officially kicks off on Thursday, April 25. So there certainly will be some shifts and changes between now and then.
