49ers 2019 mock NFL Draft: Assessing team needs over all 7 rounds
By Peter Panacy
With a quarter of the 2018 season in the books, Niner Noise dishes out a full 7-round mock NFL Draft for the San Francisco 49ers and breaks down what the team needs are next year.
Well, unfortunately, the San Francisco 49ers‘ 2018 campaign hasn’t exactly gone the way many thought it would when the calendar turned on this year.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo wasn’t supposed to be lost to an ACL injury for the season. Neither was running back Jerick McKinnon. The Niners defense was supposed to be vastly improved over what was shown a year ago.
And San Francisco was supposed to be a legitimate playoff contender.
Goes to show just how unpredictable any season can be, as the 49ers find themselves 1-3 and looking to salvage what is left from the lofty hopes the franchise had upon entering the season.
If the 2019 NFL Draft began right now, the 49ers would hold the No. 3 overall pick. At the time this article was written, the 1-3 Indianapolis Colts (playing against the New England Patriots in Week 5 on Thursday Night Football) could jump the Niners in draft order, based off win percentage. But for now, let’s just envision San Francisco holding that No. 3 pick.
To break down this quarter-of-the-way-through-the-season mock, let’s first establish the number of picks the Niners have:
- Round 1, No. 3 overall
- Round 2, No. 34 overall
- Round 3, No. 74 overall
- Round 4, No. 105 overall
- Round 6, No. 167 overall
- Round 7, No. 198 overall*
*Note: The 49ers sent off their 2019 seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for offensive tackle Shon Coleman. Since Tankathon hasn’t removed the pick, we took the luxury of assuming it was there to make another selection. It’s a seventh rounder anyway.
San Francisco doesn’t have a fifth-round pick, as that was the selection used as compensation in the 2017 deal with the Detroit Lions for offensive guard Laken Tomlinson.
The order, positioning and total of picks can/will change between now and the 2019 draft, of course. And while it’s unlikely we see the 49ers gain any compensatory picks for the net loss of qualifying free agents this upcoming offseason.
To mock our draft, we use FanSpeak’s mock “On the Clock” NFL Draft simulator with zero trades. So don’t argue “that guy will never be there at No. 34, No. 74” or whatever. If he’s available, he’s available.
Got it? Good. Let’s get this thing started.
