49ers injury news

Injuries continue to pile up for the San Francisco 49ers, who last week lost their most important player for the remainder of the season, and one of their top defenders for extended time:

Garoppolo’s knee injury will keep him out for the rest of 2018. The 49ers placed their star quarterback on injured reserve on Wednesday, and promoted QB Nick Mullens from the practice squad to the team’s active roster.

49ers top cornerback Richard Sherman will miss tomorrows game, and a number of additional weeks, due to a calf injury. Sherman left Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium in a walking boot, which he has continued to wear throughout the week. The starting CB will be replaced by defensive back Jimmie Ward.

San Francisco running back Matt Breida — the league’s top rusher through Week 3 — hyperextended his knee last week, but was able to return to the game and play at a high level. After fully participating in Thursday’s practice, Breida was a limited participant on Friday, and is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup.

Fellow RB Alfred Morris was limited in practice on Thursday and Friday, after apparently injuring his knee on Wednesday. Like Breida, Morris is also questionable for tomorrow’s game.

After returning to game action last week, wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was able to practice in full on Thursday and Friday, and should be ready for Sunday’s matchup.

Strong safety Jaquiski Tartt is doubtful for tomorrow’s game, due to a shoulder injury that kept him out of action against the Chiefs. If Tartt is sidelined, defensive back Antone Exum may start in his place. However, Exum was a late addition to the 49ers’ official injury report, and is now questionable with a quadricep injury.

Free safety Adrian Colbert, who was knocked out of the game in Kansas City, missed practice on Wednesday. Colbert was able to practice in a limited capacity on both Thursday and Friday. If Colbert can’t suit up on Sunday, rookie defensive back D.J. Reed could get his first career NFL start.

Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who continues to deal with injuries to his ankle and hip, was a full participant in practice all week, and is slated to start on the outside. Right guard Michael Person was a full participant on Friday, and should start as well.

Fellow guard Joshua Garnett missed practice all week, and is officially out for Sunday’s game.

49ers injury news will be updated throughout the day, as information is released.
