The New York Jets might have pulled off a one-sided road victory over the Lions in Week 1, showing off a strong debut from rookie quarterback Sam Darnold.
But all those lofty aspirations and reaches fell flat at home against the surprising Miami Dolphins, who got off to a 20-point lead in New York by halftime en route to a 20-12 victory over their AFC East rivals.
Darnold came back to earth too, passing for over 330 yards with one touchdown but against two interceptions, while the Jets ground game was all but inert on Sunday.
This is likely to be what one expects out of New York this season — bouts of promise marked by the realization head coach Todd Bowles’ squad is still a ways away from serious contention.
