So much for that up-and-coming Chargers defense in Week 1.

Granted, the Chiefs offense has a plethora of weapons and can win a shootout anytime possible. And edge rusher Joey Bosa (foot) was absent. Who knows how the 38-28 loss in L.A. would have gone if he was present.

But he wasn’t, which led to a pretty entertaining quarterback duel between the Chargers’ Philip Rivers and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, of which Mahomes got the better end.

Rivers was spectacular, especially in the fourth quarter, when the Chargers closed the gap on what was appearing to be a blowout. He passed for 424 yards on 51 attempts with three touchdowns, although his lone interception sealed the deal for K.C.

And wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back Melvin Gordon each added over 100 yards receiving, while fellow targets Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler each had over 80 yards through the air as well.

The Chargers offense is going to be pretty exciting this season if it can stay healthy. Yet the defensive woes are something to circle in coming weeks, especially with Bosa out for an indefinite period of time.
