The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their 2018 preseason came with a 23-21 last-second loss to the Los Angeles Chargers Thursday night. Here’s the good, bad and ugly from the exhibition bout.

Ah, yes. Week 4 of any preseason should merely be filled with the bad and ugly, right?

Even for the San Francisco 49ers, who rested most of their starters and immediate backups on Thursday night during a 23-21 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Chargers.

OK, so Chargers kicker Roberto Aguayo knocked in a 26-yard field goal as time expired to send the Niners to 1-3 this preseason. But that means little in the grand scheme of things.

Probably could say that about the majority of this final exhibition bout.

The contest did matter for a number of players, however. With most of San Francisco’s presumed 53-man roster additions not even dressed for the game, many of those who partook in the activities were, essentially, fighting for their NFL lives. A few also made strong cases to be added to the 49ers’ regular-season roster too.

So, as we do each week following a game, let’s break down all the good, bad and ugly from the Niners’ vantage point in this contest.

Yeah, there was a lot of ugly, for sure. That’s what happens with third- and fourth-string units. But there’s some good to discuss too, so let’s start there.
