Chargers vs. 49ers: Previewing Preseason Week 4 for San Francisco

49ers injury news
The majority of the 49ers’ starting offensive and defensive units will not play in tonight’s game, and a number of backups and players competing for roster spots will also be unavailable today due to injury.
When asked about players who were injured in last week’s game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Pettis, Ward and Burbridge will not play in today’s matchup, but will all be available for Week 1 of the regular season — provided each player makes the final roster.
Foster is also likely to miss tonight’s game as he recovers from last week’s concussion, but the linebacker should be cleared for action well before he’s available to play in Week 3, after serving his two-game suspension. However, on Tuesday, Shanahan declined to rule Foster out of today’s game, but it would make little sense for the star linebacker to risk further injury by playing on short rest tonight.
Williams was originally ruled out for at least three weeks after he sustained a serious rib injury in the 49ers’ second preseason game. However, Shanahan changed his tune on Tuesday, as he informed reporters that Williams could potentially return to game action this week. This could be bad news for the 49ers’ second-year runner, who would no longer be eligible to start the season on injured reserve, unless he injures himself again in tonight’s game.
Offensive lineman Erik Magnuson badly injured his hamstring against Houston, and will be on the shelf for at least six weeks.
After determining that Max McCaffrey — who missed the entire preseason with a foot injury — wouldn’t be able to play in the team’s final preseason game, the 49ers waived the wide receiver yesterday.
49ers injury news will be updated throughout the day, as information is released.
