49ers injury news

In the most positive piece of 49ers injury news, cornerback Richard Sherman will make his first appearance in a 49ers uniform today in Indianapolis. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead is also active, after missing the previous two weeks with a hamstring injury.

When Garoppolo exits, we could see more of third-string quarterback Nick Mullens under center, as backup quarterback C.J. Beathard is active today, but continues to nurse a foot sprain he sustained in last week’s game.

Based on their preseason play alone, the 49ers should have a backup QB controversy on their hands. Although Shanahan told the media Beathard will be the team’s backup quarterback to start the season, another strong showing from Mullens would be difficult for the 49ers’ coaching staff to ignore.

A number of key 49ers will miss the remainder of the preseason after sustaining earlier injuries, including starting running back Jerick McKinnon, backup RB Matt Breida and tight end George Kittle.

Running back Joe Williams is also out for the forseeable future after suffering a rib fracture and a deep hip bruise in last week’s game.

Offensive lineman Erik Magnuson badly injured his hamstring against Houston, and will be on the shelf for at least six weeks.

Defensive lineman Solomon Thomas will return to the lineup after suffering a concussion during the first drive of the preseason. Linebacker Malcolm Smith will also return for the first time since the opening drive of Week 1.

Nickle cornerback K’Waun Williams is active for today’s matchup, after he missed the 49ers’ first two preseason games due to an ankle injury. Rookie D.J. Reed will also get reps in the slot, and DB Jimmie Ward could potentially see playing time there as well due to Sherman’s return.

Offensive tackle Garry Gilliam is inactive today after missing last week’s game due to a concussion he sustained against Dallas. Wide receiver Max McCaffrey and defensive back Marcell Harris will also miss the game.

49ers injury news will be updated throughout the day, as information is released.
