49ers competitions and players to watch

Unfortunately, San Francisco’s first preseason game provided the 49ers with little clarity in any of their offensive or defensive positional battles; in fact, the performances of some players created more questions than answers.

Wide Receiver

With wide receiver Trent Taylor absent due to injury, rookie wideout James started in the slot, and had an outstanding NFL debut, which ended with a game-winning touchdown reception. Victor Bolden also stood out with an acrobatic fourth-down reception, and a game-high 54 receiving yards. Kendrick Bourne was consistent, catching all of his targets, while Aldrick Robinson was less consistent, but made an excellent diving reception.

Inside Linebacker

Starting MIKE linebacker Malcolm Smith made a quick exit from last Thursday’s game after pulling his hamstring, and is unlikely to play for the remainder of the preseason. After missing Week 1, both Warner and Coyle should make their preseason debuts today, and along with Korey Toomer, will compete for a starting role during Foster’s two-game suspension.

Right Guard

The 49ers plan to have all three right guards — Garnett, Cooper and Mike Person — available for today’s game. Although Cooper was originally the presumed starter, Garnett worked with the first team during practice on Thursday, so either one of the two lineman could get the start in today’s game. Person will work with the third team, and could also see playing time at center.

Running Back

Injuries to top running backs McKinnon and Breida opened the door for the rest of the 49ers’ RBs, Raheem Mostert, Joe Williams, Jeremy McNichols and newcomer Alfred Morris. Mostert lead the team in rushing last week but lost a key fumble, while Joe Williams averaged just 2.5 yards per carry on 11 attempts. McNichols was effective on limited carries, and could see a higher workload in Week 2. If the veteran Morris has a strong showing, he could also compete for a final roster spot.

Cornerback

In the off-chance Sherman makes his 49ers debut today, the coaching staff and fans will look to see if the former Seattle Seahawk is back to pre-injury form. Fellow defensive back Ward — who was rusty last week — will see playing time on the outside. After their fight and ejection from joint practice this week, be on the lookout for a potential rematch between Ward and Texans wideout DeAndre Hopkins.
