49ers vs. Texans: Previewing Preseason Week 2 for San Francisco

49ers injury news
A number of 49ers will miss the remainder of the preseason after sustaining injuries in last week’s matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, including Thomas, Kittle, Breida and Smith. Starting running back Jerick McKinnon will also be absent for the Niners’ final three preseason games due to a calf strain.
While his Week 1 knee injury initially appeared to be serious, linebacker Eli Harold was able to return to practice this week, and will likely play in today’s game.
Cornerback Richard Sherman practiced throughout the week, but is unlikely to make his first appearance in a 49ers uniform.
After missing last week, linebacker Brock Coyle will return to action today. Fellow linebacker Fred Warner will also return from injury, and will see his first game action after being drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft. After an impressive showing last week, Shanahan could choose to limit LB Reuben Foster‘s snaps today in a precautionary measure.
Offensive linemen Jonathan Cooper and Joshua Garnett will have their first in-game opportunity to compete for the team’s starting right guard spot, after the duo returned to practice this week.
Defensive lineman Arik Armstead will not play due to a hamstring injury, which will open the door for rookie Julian Taylor, who played exceptionally well last week against Dallas. Defensive end Ronald Blair could also get reps at the “big end” position.
Nickle cornerback K’Waun Williams is inactive for today’s matchup, after he missed Week 1 due to an ankle injury. With Williams unable to play, rookie D.J. Reed will likely start in his place. Defensive back Jimmie Ward could also see playing time in the slot.
Offensive tackle Garry Gilliam and wide receiver Max McCaffrey will also miss today’s game.
49ers injury news will be updated throughout the day, as information is released.
