49ers’ Running Back Situation Gets Interesting

The Niners’ top two running backs, Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder), remained out for practice. Neither is likely to return anytime soon, and we’ll likely see McKinnon rested for Saturday’s contest.

On Tuesday, San Francisco officially inked veteran running back Alfred Morris to a one-year deal.

Morris managed to get some work in on Wednesday, primarily with the second-team unit. Meanwhile, second-year running back Jeremy McNichols saw a lot of primary action in individual drills, according to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows:

McNichols is a long shot to make the 49ers’ 53-man roster this season. Morris is anything but a guarantee too, although he certainly has a better shot given his prior body of work with Kyle Shanahan from their time together with the Washington Redskins.

In all likelihood, McNichols will see a good amount of snaps on Saturday. This will afford the Niners a chance to keep presumed roster additions healthy for the regular season — important, given the number of injuries San Francisco is dealing with at the position right now.
