No. 1: Offensive Guard Joshua Garnett

Ahkello Witherspoon might have had a disappointing training camp for the most part. But he’s going to be on the 53-man roster, barring injury.

The same can’t be said of third-year offensive guard Joshua Garnett, who has missed all but two-plus practices with a knee injury. On day three of Niners training camp, Garnett banged the same knee he had surgically repaired last season up against a fellow teammate.

The former Stanford lineman hasn’t played since.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Garnett won’t need another procedure on his knee, which caused him to miss all of 2017. That’s good news, but the fact Garnett isn’t on the field now is a major point of worry.

Garnett is expected to battle it out for the starting right guard position with Jonathan Cooper, who was recently cleared from offseason MCL surgery. Cooper has been participating in individual drills since being activated. And as long as the coaching staff is getting extended looks at him, not Garnett, the prospects for starting this season grow dim for the latter.

One might argue Garnett has been on the hot seat ever since head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch took over last year. Few picks from the Trent Baalke era remain, and Garnett looks to be yet another one of those whose job is in jeopardy.
