No. 3: Offensive Tackle Mike McGlinchey

It’s far too early to suggest the 49ers’ top pick from the 2018 NFL Draft is a bust. If anything, rookie offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey is merely going through some of the growing pains associated with many first-year offensive linemen.

Run blocking was one of the primary reasons the Niners selected McGlinchey with the No. 9 overall pick in the draft. It was one of his strengths at Notre Dame. Not so much pass protection, though.

So far throughout camp, it appears as if McGlinchey has struggled a lot in this area.

Back on July 28, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows posted an Instagram shot of McGlinchey getting beat by EDGE Cassius Marsh on an inside move during a one-on-one drill. McGlinchey bounced back nicely right afterwards, however.

On Aug. 1, however, Marsh managed to get around McGlinchey again in relatively easy fashion (h/t Niners Wire’s Rob Lowder):

Again, it’s far too early to say this is a sign of things to come. But for a top-10 pick from the draft, one would hope McGlinchey would have been able to make more an of immediate impact in this area, which is cause for the moderate disappointment.

Look for the rookie to work on this skill set as camp moves along.
