No. 5: Quarterback Jeff Garcia

Less than half of quarterback Jeff Garcia’s pro career was spent with the 49ers. But the Gilroy native certainly made a name for himself as a member of the Niners after being swooped up by San Francisco in 1999 after a successful CFL stretch.

Garcia’s first year wasn’t so great, but he went on to be a Pro Bowler over three consecutive seasons — 2000, 2001 and 2002 — and helped the transition from quarterbacking great Steve Young go much more smoothly.

All the signs pointed to Garcia being the next pinnacle quarterback for San Francisco. But internal problems within the organization — yes, Terrell Owens — and salary cap issues forced the 49ers to make some tough decisions after 2003.

Garcia ended up with the Cleveland Browns in 2004, Detroit Lions in 2005, the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006 and enjoyed a brief two-year term with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers between 2007-08. There was even a quick “cup of coffee” with the Raiders too.

Wow, that looked weird.

He rounded out his playing days back with Philadelphia and the Houston Texans.

But, for the Bay Area native, anything other than a 49ers uniform still doesn’t look quite right.
