The San Francisco 49ers kicked off their second week of 2018 training camp practice, and Niner Noise breaks down some of the top takeaways from Tuesday’s action.

After a players’ day off on Monday, the San Francisco 49ers resumed their 2018 training camp with full on-field workouts on July 31.

The Niners received some not-so-great injury news to kick off the session, as reported by The Athletic’s Matt Barrows:

Seeing defensive tackle Arik Armstead on the injury report hurts, especially considering the length of time he missed with a hand injury last season. Although the 49ers are putting him at the left defensive end (big end) this year, which is the position best suited to his skill set.

More concerning, however, is third-year guard Joshua Garnett, who banged knees with a teammate last week, resulting in an injury the Niners don’t think is too serious.

Well, it’s serious enough to keep Garnett out on a day-to-day basis. And with plenty of questions surrounding Garnett’s long-term fit with the team, he needs as many reps as possible before the regular season kicks off in September.

On a positive note, Barrows also reported a number of key players were activated from the NFI and PUP lists for Tuesday’s practice:

Veteran guard Jonathan Cooper is Garnett’s primary competition for starting duties along the right side of San Francisco’s offensive line. And while the Niners will likely slowly work in Cooper, who underwent MCL-repair surgery this offseason, Garnett’s absence doesn’t bode well with Cooper’s return.

Perhaps to account for tight end Cole Hikutini‘s injury, the Niners inked fourth-year pro TE Wes Saxton, releasing defensive back C.J. Goodwin to make room on the roster.

Niner Noise breaks down the remaining news and analysis from day five of 49ers training camp, 2018.
