San Francisco 49ers: Player stock watch after first week of 2018 training camp
By Peter Panacy
Cornerback Richard Sherman
Sunday’s practice marked the first time Richard Sherman donned pads in a 49ers uniform — he had a veteran’s day off Saturday.
Sherman, however, looked sluggish on the field. And on the first of two one-on-one drills, this one against wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, the three-time All-Pro was beat.
Badly:
Again, the one-on-one cornerback disadvantage applies here. And Sherman has never been known for elite straight-line speed, particularly up against a speedster like Goodwin. On the positive note, Sherman recovered nicely on the following drill against fellow wideout Aldrick Robinson. So that’s a plus.
Later on, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh (h/t 49ers Webzone) indicated Sherman is “trying to get his football legs back” after suffering an Achilles injury in 2017 and all the subsequent surgery and recovery.
So it’s understandable the 49ers aren’t asking Sherman to go at 100 percent.
Regardless, Sherman’s opening efforts weren’t particularly great.
