No. 6: Mike McGlinchey Was So-So His First Week

High-profile rookies always garner a lot of attention during training camp, and the 49ers’ first selection from the 2018 NFL Draft, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, had a bit of a mixed bag at practice.

McGlinchey went up against edge rusher Cassius Marsh in a one-on-one drill on Saturday and got beat on Marsh’s inside move, as shown in this clip from The Athletic’s Matt Barrows:

While McGlinchey recovered nicely on the next drill, he did view the “loss” as a learning experience.

“I’m not really counting wins and losses in one-on-ones,” McGlinchey told reporters of the play. “I’m working on technique… working on the timing. Like I said, it was my first live pass-rush rep in eight-plus months, so the timing was a little off, he got into me and did a great job.”

McGlinchey was known more for his run blocking at Notre Dame and not necessarily his pass protection.

It seems as if that’s looking to be the case early on, and it’s something McGlinchey will need to work on for the remainder of camp.
