With little over a month before the San Francisco 49ers begin training camp, Niner Noise explores what will likely be the five biggest positional battles to watch in 2018.

We’re officially amid the down time before the San Francisco 49ers resume offseason activities, kicking off 2018 training camp towards the end of July.

The Niners wrapped up OTAs and mandatory minicamp earlier this month and will have a bit of time off before the pads officially come on in the final weeks before the preseason.

Sure, there’s already a lot of speculation about how 2018 will shake out. Questions about depth, various positions and how well each player stacks up against expectations will dominate the conversation between now and Week 1.

There are obviously a lot of unknowns and X-factors yet to be determined. But it’s not hard to consider some of the more interesting position battles that will garner the most attention.

Here are the five most interesting heading into training camp:

  1. Offensive Guard
  2. Cornerback
  3. EDGE
  4. Backup Running Back
  5. Wide Receiver

Each of these positions carry question marks the 49ers haven’t totally answered this offseason. So let’s break each one down and describe why the camp battles will be so crucial.
