No. 1: Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos

The 49ers have truly been the luckiest team in the NFL ever since Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke were fired following 2016.

Not just because Bill Belichick was feeling angry at New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft and traded a franchise quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, to Niners general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. The fact 49ers CEO Jed York landed Shanahan as head coach is the biggest win in my eyes.

And it would not have happened if John Elway, general manager of the Denver Broncos, hired Shanahan as head coach in the 2017 offseason. The team brought him in for an interview, and many speculated that he would not walk out without a deal. He did, though, and the Broncos ended up hiring Vance Joseph, the ex-Dolphins defensive coordinator.

Big mistake, Mr. Elway. This move forced out Wade Phillips, arguably the best defensive mind in football, and caused the Broncos to miss out on arguably the best offensive mind in football in Shanahan.

Joseph derailed the team in his debut season as head coach. It was not just the offense, which changed quarterbacks for what seemed like every week, that was in a funk.

It was the historic Super Bowl 50-winning Broncos defense that took a turn for the worse as well, allowing approximately 24 points per game. This was a defensive unit full of stars looking like a very mediocre one — it was painful to watch.

Come on, Vance, defense is supposed to be your specialty!

If things don’t change under Joseph soon, especially after what I thought was a superior draft the Broncos had this year, there is no doubt in my mind Elway will boot Joseph out of Denver.

And Joseph will no longer be having the time of his life, to quote legendary ESPN sideline reporter Sergio Dipp.
