NFL power rankings: 32-team breakdown after the 2018 NFL Draft
By Peter Panacy
Best Pick: CB Denzel Ward, Ohio State
The Browns had four picks in the first two rounds of the draft, which is a great asset for a rebuilding team coming off a winless season.
Cleveland’s biggest move, of course, was going with Baker Mayfield at quarterback. General manager John Dorsey apparently was set on Mayfield for a while but kept the secret close all the way up to when the former Oklahoma signal-caller’s name was announced.
Some may argue Mayfield wasn’t the best quarterback in this year’s draft class and were shocked the Browns didn’t take USC’s Sam Darnold. But Mayfield’s chippy attitude and confidence is exactly what Cleveland needs going forward. And with the veteran, Tyrod Taylor, the Browns won’t have to rush Mayfield into the fray either. That’s a good thing.
Yet Cleveland’s best pick, cornerback Denzel Ward, could make a more immediate impact. He’s the closest thing to a true shutdown corner in this year’s draft, and he’ll be exciting to watch from day one.
The Browns still have a long, long way to go before turning things around. But at least this NFL Draft indicated a good start.
