The San Francisco 49ers signed former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Korey Toomer to a one-year deal Wednesday. Let’s take a look at what the signing means for the Niners.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed free agent linebacker Korey Toomer to a one-year contract, as noted by David Bonilla of the 49erswebzone.com. The deal came swiftly after the two sides met Wednesday.

What does this deal mean for the 49ers?

Toomer’s signing likely provides depth in San Francisco’s linebacking corps. In his five-year career, Toomer has totaled 130 tackles with 42 assists. He also has two sacks, five passes defensed and a 59-yard interception touchdown. Add in his five forced fumbles and Toomer hasn’t had a terrible career thus far.

Over the past two seasons, Toomer has really come on. The sixth-year linebacker posted a career best 75 tackles in 2016. In his article, Bonilla points out that 2016 was Toomer’s best season. He was rated the most efficient run-stopping linebacker in football (minimum 100 run snaps), per Pro Football Focus’ Edge package (subscription required).

As a result of Toomer’s signing, the 49ers now believe they have a capable ‘stack linebacker’, per general manager John Lynch.

“We’re excited to add a talented player like Korey to our defensive unit,” Lynch said, via a statement issued by the team. “Korey is a good fit for the ‘stack linebacker’ position in our scheme and he provides our team another good football player with plenty of NFL experience in similar systems.”

What is a ‘stack linebacker’?

According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, the Seahawks used their SAM linebacker (strong side) in this role. This player is key in taking on outside runs. Of course, they should be able to rush the passer and cover too.

In particular, height plays a role in defining this position. Because of this, Toomer’s 6’2″, 235 pound frame is close to ideal. He has height to take on offensive tackles and cover tight ends.

Now, it doesn’t seem like a one-year deal would indicate the 49ers have big plans for Toomer. Players like guard Johnathan Cooper, defensive end Jeremiah Attochu and Toomer might only be rentals. As a result, the draft will be important for the team’s future.

Toomer and Attochu have experience in the Niner’s base 4-3 hybrid scheme though. The 49ers filled an important need with Toomer as well. The team is prepared at all three linebacker spots. As a result, the draft will be easier and Toomer could flourish for one season in the 49ers least important defensive role.
