49ers 2018 draft plans: Quality of players selected ninth overall in the NFL Draft
By Chris Wilson
LB Leonard Floyd, 2016
In 2016, the Chicago Bears traded the No. 11 pick and a fourth-round pick to move up to No. 9 to select outside linebacker Leonard Floyd. The Bears hoped that by adding mass onto his skinny 6-foot-6 frame, Floyd would be able to turn the 4.5 sacks he amassed in his senior season into double-digit sacks at the next level.
Floyd was able to bulk up prior to his NFL debut, and showed flashes during his rookie season, recording seven sacks over 12 games. The outside linebacker added another 4.5 sacks in his sophomore campaign before ending the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury.
Floyd underwent surgery in November to repair his MCL and PCL, and hopes to be healthy for the beginning of the 2018 season, but expressed concern regarding his availability for Chicago’s offseason program.
The jury is still out on Floyd, who has been able to produce at the NFL level, but has yet to become the pass-rushing force the Bears hoped they would receive when the traded up for the prospect.
