Virginia Tech. Tremaine Edmunds. 10. player. 42. . Linebacker

The 49ers’ situation with linebacker Reuben Foster is dicey at best. After two offseason arrests, the Niners have to think hard about what the future holds for him. Both with the team, within the NFL and off the field as well.

A contingency plan is needed here. And while many would argue Roquan Smith is the better overall linebacker, Virginia Tech’s Tremaine Edmunds might be more the natural fit.

Edmunds’ 6-foot-5, 250-pound frame makes him a better candidate to play on the outside, perhaps eventually assuming a SAM linebacker role in coordinator Robert Saleh’s 4-3 Under defense. And Edmunds, who is only 19 years old, would automatically be a clear upgrade over incumbent SAM, Eli Harold, who has been little more than a non-factor since the 49ers drafted him in 2015.

San Francisco still has plenty of other needs. But at least quarterback isn’t one of them anymore.
