No. 1: Maurice Hurst, Defensive Tackle, Michigan

I’m going to say off the bat, I feel bad for putting Maurice Hurst on this list, as his only crime is being undersized. I would like to reiterate at this point this list is not in any particular order, and I would be lying if I said that I was totally opposed to the idea of having Hurst at the 49ers.

But despite my personal feelings, there is one big problem.

The 49ers need to be very discriminating in their mission to complete the defensive line.

As an undersized defensive tackle at 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, who only really fits as a 3-technique in the NFL and doesn’t have the sack production to convince people he can overcome that (he has a career high of 5.5 sacks in college).

Hurst is much too limited to use a first-round pick on, while probably not being a realistic chance to fall to the 49ers’ second rounder.
