No. 1: EDGE Harold Landry, Boston College

6-foot-3, 250 pounds

Collegiate Stats

Sticking with the pass-rushing theme, there’s hardly a way North Carolina State’s Bradley Chubb makes it past the pass rush-needy Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 7 overall. He’s arguably the best prospect in this year’s draft class.

Going with a pure pass-rusher with their first pick still wouldn’t be a bad idea for the 49ers, though. After all, one could argue a quality EDGE is the most important non-quarterback position on a team’s roster.

But if someone slips, even better.

Boston College’s Harold Landry would have been viewed a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft after his 16.5-sack campaign in 2016. Yet injuries and lack of production has pushed him down into the fringes of the late second or early third rounds, per NFL Draft Scout.

The Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows added more:

"Based on his 2016 numbers – 16 1/2 sacks, 22 tackles for loss – Landry would be an easy pick for the 49ers. He has the prototypical elasticity and quickness the defensive scheme calls for at the Leo position. But those numbers fell to five sacks and 8 1/2 tackles for loss last season. He was injured but wasn’t playing as well even before those injuries struck. One of the questions for Landry – he’s listed at 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds – is whether he’s big enough to be a three-down player. His weigh-in next week will be significant."

Simply put, Landry will need to prove his worth at the combine to help solidify any ideal targeting by San Francisco.
