Predicting 5 returning veterans who don’t make 49ers’ 2018 roster

No. 5: Outside Linebacker Elvis Dumervil
What? 2017 sack leader Elvis Dumervil is not going to make the team next year? Well, I’m actually not so sure about his future standing with the team as well, so I put him at No. 5 on the list.

But just hear me out.
There is a lot to like about Dumervil. He was the team’s best pass-rusher in the 2017 season, racking up 6.5 sacks over the course of the year. He is a veteran that can teach the young 49ers defensive line how to rush the passer, which was undoubtedly its biggest problem in 2017.
However, Dumervil is 34 years old, making him the oldest player on the team by a lot. He is bound to drop off in production soon — and the worst part is that it might be already happening.
Yes, Dumervil had 6.5 sacks on the year, but only had 13 total tackles and nine solo tackles this year. Those 13 tackles include those 6.5 sacks, meaning that over the course of the year, Dumervil only had 6.5 run stops — and that’s not good. He is only a pass-rusher, and nothing more.
