As with any NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers have had a fair share of unfavorable signings during the offseason. Niner Noise discusses the five worst free agents the Niners have ever signed throughout their franchise history.

The San Francisco 49ers have now set their sights on improving their roster this offseason. Along with the 2018 NFL Draft in April, San Francisco will look at its options in free agency and address its positional needs.

General manager John Lynch and the entire front office have already kept themselves busy since the 2017 season ended. The 49ers recently re-signed defensive end Cassius Marsh, center Daniel Kilgore and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo became the highest-paid player in the NFL after signing a five-year, $137.5 million contract with San Francisco.

The free-agent market will open up in a few weeks and the 49ers need to find answers for their issues with pass protection, pass rushing and pass defense.

While this year is full of talented free agents, such as running back Le’Veon Bell and tight end Jimmy Graham, San Francisco should still be cautious when signing players off the market. Similar to draft picks, free agents can also turn into busts due to unforeseen circumstances.

Taking a trip down memory lane, Niner Noise picked the five worst free-agent signings throughout the franchise’s history. Honorable mentions include defensive end Gabe Wilkins and quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan.
