Trade No. 3: Use a 2019 First Rounder on Cornerback Marcus Peters

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio speculated the Kansas City Chiefs may be inclined to trade two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters after landing fellow corner David Amerson in free agency.

It’s kind of a silly thought, but there’s some merit to it. Peters is playing on his rookie contract and will surely command a hefty payday after this season or next, depending on what happens with the former first-round pick’s fifth-year option.

Kansas City is in a tough salary cap situation right now, and it’s unlikely it can afford a lucrative extension. And the Chiefs would likely want to get something out of him in return, especially if you subscribe to the notion Peters and head coach Andy Reid are not seeing eye to eye.

If Peters is on the trading block, again not likely, his services wouldn’t come cheap. It would likely take a first-round pick to nab his services in 2018.

Yet San Francisco needs a cornerback opposite second-year pro Ahkello Witherspoon, and Peters has the man-to-man coverage skills perfectly adept for a Cover 3, single-high safety scheme.

And with still nearly $75 million still available in cap space, the Niners could offer an early front-loaded extension if Peters winds up being an ideal fit.

So here’s the proposed trade — San Francisco sends off a 2019 first-round draft pick to the Chiefs in exchange for the 25-year-old Peters.
