No. 8: 49ers Demolish the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV
The 49ers’ attempts to win back-to-back Super Bowls at the tail end of the 1980s came to fruition when quarterback Joe Montana and Co. faced off against quarterback John Elway and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV on January 28, 1990.
San Francisco was dominant in the 1989 season, and went 14-2 under first-year head coach George Seifert.
With Montana and Elway set to square off against each other, this game looked to be a classic.
At least it turned out as such for 49ers fans.
The 49ers got out to a 27-3 lead by halftime and tacked on an additional 28 points in the second half. Montana threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns, while wide receiver Jerry Rice had 148 receiving yards and three touchdown grabs.
All Denver could manage was a meager 10 points and 167 all-purpose yards.
Super Bowl XXIV was absolute domination from San Francisco and forever sealed the 49ers as the team of the decade.
