5 prospects the 49ers should watch at the 2018 East-West Shrine Game
By Peter Panacy
No. 1: Wide Receiver Daurice Fountain, Northern Iowa
Projected Draft Position: N/A
There’s an argument the 49ers may not be in need of a top-tier wide receiver this offseason.
After all, the Niners nearly got 1,000 receiving yards from Marquise Goodwin last year. And fellow wideout Pierre Garçon was on pace to do the same before a season-ending neck injury halfway through 2017.
If this is the case, San Francisco won’t use a top draft pick on a receiver. But that doesn’t eliminate a mid-to-late-round selection.
A player to watch here is Northern Iowa wideout Daurice Fountain.
Our friend Jerod Brown over at Niners Wire highlighted how Fountain has been “blowing up Shrine Game practices.” Here’s what Brown had to say:
"When speaking to scouts after practices, Fountain noted that his vertical and broad jumps were 40 inches and 11-foot-1-inch, respectively, and that’s before pre-combine specific training. Consider that he measured in with firehose 34.5-inch arms and it’s clear to see why teams will be wanting to get a closer look. The elite physical traits aren’t in one category – they’re across the board. And Fountain has used that physicality, paired with solid hands and toughness at the catch point, to stand out this week."

Additionally, Fountain’s 6-foot-2 frame would automatically make him the tallest receiver on San Francisco’s roster.
Pair that with the 49ers’ red-zone issues in 2017, it’s easy to see why Fountain could be a mid-round find.
