The ugly

Rushing attack

The most glaring aspect of the 49ers offense was the lack of impact from running backs Carlos Hyde and Matt Breida. The pair combined for an absolutely abysmal 38 yards on 21 carries — 1.8 yards per rush.

It was the worst performance the two have put up all season, as the whole team suffered to the tune of 51 total rushing yards. It is also a testament to the front-seven of the Titans, who had a solid day overall.

While also shutting down the San Francisco rushing attack, Tennessee registered three sacks and four quarterback hits.

Third quarter stall out

Garoppolo’s ability to eat up the clock is an aspect of his game that stand outs to me. Time-of-possession has switched heavily in the favor of the 49ers since Garoppolo took over, and that means the defense has more fuel in the tank as they are playing less snaps per game.

At halftime, it was all red and gold. The lead sat at only six, with San Francisco up 16-10, but it was clear who was dominating the game. Time-of-possession was once again in favor of the 49ers, and you could feel them controlling the game with long scoring drives.

But that changed in the third quarter, as the Titans began holding the ball and thus took back control of the game. There were only three drives in the quarters, two of them going to Tennessee, and 49ers failed to score in that frame.

It nearly cost them the game. Fortunately, San Francisco woke up in time to regain focus and right the ship to a victory.

It is three games into the Jimmy Garoppolo experiment, and so far it has been positive results. Next week will be another test, as the stout Jacksonville Jaguars defense comes to town for Week 16.
