49ers Predictions at Running Back

Again, so much of this depends whether or not Carlos Hyde re-signs with San Francisco between now and next season.

But since we’re dishing out predictions, let’s make a decision.

The 49ers attempt to re-sign Hyde, but another NFL team out there — let’s say, the Detroit Lions — makes a substantial offer Hyde can’t refuse. In the Lions’ case, they’re in need of a top-flight tailback to help take pressure off quarterback Matthew Stafford and the passing game. One could easily argue it’s their biggest offensive need.

Hyde wouldn’t be forced to split time either, and Detroit’s prospects for a postseason push look a bit better than those of San Francisco.

As a result, the Niners are forced to explore internal options, as well as those in free agency and the draft.

Free agency might provide a depth option — someone to compete in camp and, possibly, provide extra assistance on special teams. But the draft is probably where Kyle Shanahan and Co. get help.

It just won’t be early, so cross off Saquon Barkley from your Niners wish list.

Matt Breida might wind up being the favorite to start in 2017, which isn’t a bad thing. He’s averaged only 3.9 yards per carry, but the low numbers were influenced by a relative lack of use early on this season.

And we can’t count out Joe Williams either, who still has the luxury of being hand-picked by Shanahan in this year’s draft.
