The Cardinals climb a spot in our NFL power rankings this week, but they should have easily beaten the 49ers, who are about as talent-strapped and injury-riddled as can be this deep into the season.

Arizona is dealing with its own injuries too, especially with quarterback Carson Palmer (arm) out indefinitely. But backup quarterback Drew Stanton was effective enough against a makeshift Niners defense, tossing 201 yards for two touchdowns against one interception. He may not be great, but he hasn’t been a liability for head coach Bruce Arians this season.

It was also nice to see newly acquired running back Adrian Peterson churn out big yards, picking up 159 of them on the ground and averaging 4.3 yards per attempt.

But the only way the Cardinals tread water this season will be because of their defense. And that group got to San Francisco quarterback C.J. Beathard for five sacks and a whopping 16 hits.
