Quarterback comparison

Last week, the 49ers shook up the NFL by trading for New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

In a trade that sent reverberations throughout the league, the New England Patriots acquired a 2018 2nd-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

While the 2nd-round pick most likely ends up becoming a de-facto 1st-round selection (due to the fact that the 49ers probably end up with the NFL’s second-worst or worst record), the value is certainly there for San Francisco as they have seemingly have found an answer to their quarterbacking woes.

Even though Beathard is technically still the starter, it is clear moving forward that this team is Garoppolo’s for the foreseeable future. In four career starts, which all came last season, Garoppolo was 43-63 passing for 502 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

New England went 4-1 during those starts. It is a small sample size, but it is an indicator that success can be achieved with Garoppolo under center.

With Carson Palmer injured, it is Drew Stanton up next.

After breaking his left arm in London against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7, quarterback Carson Palmer is out for the season. That means Drew Stanton is up next, and it is not an entirely foreign position for the 33-year-old signal-caller.

Stanton was the starter for eight games during the 2014 season, in which the Cardinals went 5-3. For his career, Stanton is a 53 percent passer who has 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. In his six wins as a starting quarterback, Stanton has thrown for six touchdowns compared to two interceptions.

With Arizona in free fall, the team is 3-4 on the season and has been blown out in their last two losses, the play of Stanton will be the stabilizer — or de-stabilizer — for the Cardinals moving forward.
