No. 5: Safety Eric Reid

Veteran safety Eric Reid is on this list, not necessarily because of a poor performance, but rather due to the fact he’s lost his starting job.

As NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco pointed out, Reid’s Week 2 knee injury against the Seattle Seahawks has given way to the rise of fellow safety Jaquiski Tartt, which has pushed Reid into a backup role since his return to action.

Reid saw 48 snaps during the game, whereas Tartt saw all 75.

The Niners fielded three-safety sets early on in the game to counter Dallas’ three-wide offensive formations — a move likely intended to take some pressure off San Francisco’s beleaguered cornerback crop and to reinforce the thinness the team is experiencing at linebacker.

Reid is set to be a free agent after this season, and it doesn’t seem likely the 49ers re-sign him now.
