Quarterback C.J. Beathard

If not Brian Hoyer, the 49ers’ only other option was to throw in the rookie, C.J. Beathard.

Beathard wasn’t perfect by any means. But if we measure a quarterback’s job by how effectively he moves an offense, he’s clearly a better choice over Hoyer.

Kyle Shanahan went to Hoyer midway through the second quarter, and the quarterback’s numbers are certainly enough to suggest the head coach made the right move — 19-of-36 for 245 yards and a touchdown against one interception.

And that lone pick, by the way, was on a desperation throw in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter with the Niners trailing by two.

Hard to fault the rookie there.

Shanahan noted after the game Beathard would remain the starter from this point onward. So this is an easy bump in stock.
