49ers film room: Top 10 plays from Week 5 vs. Colts
By Chris Wilson
Pierre Garçon 13-yard reception (No. 9)
With under five minutes remaining in the game, the 49ers face a 3rd-and-10 from their 37-yard line. The Niners line up with 11 personnel in a trips formation, with tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Pierre Garçon lined up tight to the formation.
Wide receiver Trent Taylor goes in motion and the corner follows, which tells quarterback Brian Hoyer that the Colts are probably playing man coverage against the three receivers.
After the ball is snapped, the Indianapolis corners do play man against the three receivers, but the Colts play zone on the opposite side of the field. Brian Hoyer releases the ball to Garçon, who beat his man on a slant, but the ball is tipped at the line.
Somehow, the ball falls between the four Indianapolis defenders and into Garçon’s hands — proving that it’s often better to be lucky than good:
Win probability: +12% (11% to 23%)
