49ers: Live Week 5 updates, analysis and thread versus Colts
In a Week 5 road matchup, the San Francisco 49ers face the Indianapolis Colts as they seek their first win of the season. Niner Noise has all your updates from the game, as well as analysis and your comment thread.
Despite all that was done in the offseason by the San Francisco 49ers, the team is off to its worst start of the decade. Even more poor than the 2015 and 2016 seasons, when the 49ers were in a coaching flux.
But even with the losing record, the situation around the team feels a lot better than it did the past two seasons. There is a sense of direction, San Francisco is playing very competitive and there seems to be competence on the sidelines.
Running back Carlos Hyde is playing at a top level, while defensive lineman DeForest Buckner is putting himself into elite status with his performances so far.
Those two, alongside the whole play of the defensive unit, provide for some optimism moving forward.
Now, it’s just all about nabbing the inaugural win of Kyle Shanahan’s head coaching career.
As always, Niner Noise has your in-game thread with scoring updates and a comment thread you can participate in at the bottom of the article.
Follow along with us, as the 49ers aim to finally get their first victory of the season.
First Quarter
The 49ers will open the game on defense. On their first drive, the Indianapolis offense was rolling: four first downs in five minutes of holding the ball. But Jaquiski Tartt’s sack and a false start penalty forced the Colts to stall out, and Adam Vinatieri nailed the 52-yard field goal to put Indianapolis up 3-0 with 9:09 left in the first quarter.
For San Francisco, the offense was dealing itself as wide receiver Pierre garçon was targeted five times and hauled in five receptions for 51 yards. Hoyer’s pass to tight end George Kittle on third down was incomplete, and Robbie Gould came on for the 28-yard field goal to tie it at 3-3 with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
Second Quarter
After a DeForest Buckner run stuff, the 49ers are able to get a stop and force the punt. San Francisco will take over at their own 8-yard line.
Hoyer badly misses an open Marquise Goodwin on third down, and the 49ers have a quick three-and-out. On the punt return, the Colts attempted to lateral it but ended up losing yardage. They have the ball at their own 25-yard line.
It’s a game of punts now, as the San Francisco stalls out itself. Another punt, and the Colts have the ball at their own 44-yard line.
Elvis Dumveril came up huge for the 49ers on the ensuing drive, and sacked Jacoby Brissett to push the Colts out of field goal range. San Francisco has the ball at their own 19-yard line.
The offensive ineptitude has returned — another punt for the 49ers offense. Colts have the ball at their own 21-yard line with 4:56 left in the second quarter.
The Colts offense drove all the way down the goal line, but Rashard Robinson broke up the pass intended for T.Y. Hilton in the end zone on third down. Vinatieri came on for a 23-yard field goal to put Indianapolis up 6-3 with 59 seconds left.
And with Garçon and Goodwin receptions, the 49ers offense was able to quickly get down the field to get in field-goal range. Gould, after missing the initial kick when Chuck Pagano tried to freeze him, made the 43-yard attempt to tie the game 6-6. That’s the score we have heading into halftime.
Third Quarter
It’s been a rough game for Hyde, who fumbled the handoff on 2nd down on the opening drive of the third quarter. The 49ers have to punt, and the Colts take over at the 50-yard line.
Indianapolis was able to get into the red zone, but a botched snap by Gore in a wild cat formation and a DeForest Buckner sack force the Colts to kick another field goal. Vinatieri makes the 38-yard kick, and it’s 9-6 with Indianapolis leading. There is 7:47 left in the third quarter.
The 49ers offense can’t do anything, another sack on third down forces the punt team to come on again. The Colts take over at their own 40-yard line.
Boom. Just like that, Indianapolis quickly moves down the field and caps it off with a 22-yard touchdown run by running back Marlon Mack. The Colts lead 16-6 with 3:17 left in the third quarter.
The 49ers are marching, and will have the ball at Indianapolis’s 29-yard to open the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Hoyer misses Garçon on 3rd down, who looked like he was held and the refs missed the call. Gould makes the 40-yard field goal to bring it to 16-9 with 13:39 left in the fourth quarter.
A 63-yard completion to Hilton and a conversion on 3rd and 15 lead to the another Colts touchdown, with Brissett running it in for a 3-yard touchdown. Indianapolis leads 23-9 with 9:56 left to play.
Goodwin’s two long receptions brought the 49ers to the Colts goal line, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk scored on a 6-yard shovel pass. It is now 23-16, Indianapolis leading with 8:00 left in the game. Juice earning that fullback money.
Huge, huge stop for the 49ers defense to force the punt and San Francisco takes over with 5:29 to play.
Tight end George Kittle with three massive plays for the 49ers and San Francisco is at the Indianapolis 2-yard line. Kittle capped off his impressive drive with the 5-yard touchdown to tie the game 23-23 with 20 seconds left. We’re off to overtime.
