Cornerback Rashard Robinson

2017 is proving to be more of a forgettable year for second-year pro Rashard Robinson.

San Francisco’s No. 1 cornerback has been targeted 25 times already this season and is averaging an average of 10.9 yards per catch, per Pro Football Focus. All this has amounted to a 36.2 overall PFF grade through four weeks — certainly not indicative of a top corner.

There are a number of bad plays that stood out, including this near touchdown against Cardinals running back Andre Ellington that was overturned:

Robinson has had issues taking correct angles to would-be receivers, and the inability to turn his head has also been problematic.

Unfortunately, San Francisco doesn’t have any true option to upgrade the position, barring a trade or a possible free-agent pickup or waiver-wire addition.

So it’s likely Robinson’s struggles are going to be the norm for the Niners defense in coming weeks. Simply put, though, he’s not living up to the kind of hype we saw from 2016.
