49ers: Live Week 4 updates, analysis and thread versus the Cardinals
The San Francisco 49ers head to the desert to take on the Arizona Cardinals in a Week 4 matchup. Niner Noise has all your updates from the game, as well as analysis and your comment thread.
It’s October, and the San Francisco 49ers have yet to collect a win this season. A revamped roster has resulted in a winless start, and the 49ers are looking at an 0-4 record.
That’ll be all but the final nail in the coffin on the 2017 campaign for San Francisco if they do lose this game. And even a win today won’t really do that much for the team, as it’s clear the 49ers still have a long way to go to be competitive.
Today, running back Carlos Hyde looks to continue his hot streak to the season. Entering Week 4, Hyde is 3rd in the NFL for most rushing yards. Fortunately for the 49ers, Hyde is active and playing, per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
The defensive line aims to overcome it’s sluggish start in the pass rushing department as they face an Arizona Cardinals offensive line that is reeling. Last week, Arizona gave up six sacks and right guard Mike Iupati is out with an injury.
As always, Niner Noise has your in-game thread with scoring updates and a comment thread you can participate in at the bottom of the article.
Follow along with us, as the 49ers seek to finally get their first victory of the season.
First Quarter
San Francisco will start the game on defense.
Solomon Thomas hits Carson Palmer on the first play of the game — a sign of things to come? But the Cardinals are able to string together a few completions and are moving the ball down the field. On 3rd and 11, Palmer gets another completion despite pressure in his face.
The 49ers defensive line forces Palmer to throw an interception in the end zone and the 49ers take over at their own 20-yard line. DeForest Buckner and Aaron Lynch caused that turnover, and Ray-Ray Armstrong finished it off with the pick.
The offense comes on, and it’s a three-and-out for the 49ers. Hoyer missed Trent Taylor on 3rd down. Cardinals will take over at their 17-yard line.
Solid drive for the 49ers defense, who force a three-and-out. Rashard Robinson had the pass break-up on third down. San Francisco takes over at their own 24-yard line after a penalty on the punt.
The 49ers were able to move the ball with an 18-yard completion to Goodwin, an 11-yard Hyde run and a 12-yard completion to Taylor. On a 4th and 1, Hoyer sneaks it for a first down. That would be the end of the moving the ball for San Francisco, and Robbie Gould’s 49-yard field goal puts the 49ers up 3-0 with 2:05 left in the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Donate Johnson gets beat by Jaron Brown for 32 yards to open the second quarter and the Cardinals are in 49ers territory. On 3rd and goal, Robinson is beat by Andre Ellington for a 12-yard touchdown reception but it’s reversed and Phil Dawson’s 29-yard field goal ties the game. There is 13:07 left in the second quarter.
Two big completions to Aldrick Robinson push the ball into the Cardinals side of the field. A mix of Hyde and now the 49ers are in the red zone. But it doesn’t matter, as Hoyer is sacked for an 11-yard loss. Gould’s 39-yard field goal has San Francisco leading 6-3 with 7:16 left in the first half.
The 49ers defensive line is racking up quarterback hits and pressures, but they can’t get a sack. Zero so far this game for the unit. And maybe I’m good luck, because right after I typed that, the defensive line proceeded to pressure Palmer every play.
Solomon Thomas gets his first career NFL sack and forces the punt, the 49ers take over at their own 12-yard line.
Then Hoyer happened, and on 3rd and 4, Antione Bethea nabs an interception. Cardinals are in San Francisco territory with under two minutes to play. Luckily for the 49ers, Ellington drops the pass on 3rd and 5. Dawson’s 43-yard field goal is good and the game is tied 6-6 with 1:24 to play in the second quarter.
Both offenses sputter out to end the half, and we enter the break all tied up at 6 apiece.
Third Quarter
A Trent Taylor penalty and Hoyer sack push the 49ers out of the red zone, causing Gould to come on again. Gould’s 47-yard field goal is good, and San Francisco leads 9-6 with 10:34 left in the third quarter.
Robinson interferes Jaron Brown on Arizona’s subsequent drive and that’s Robinson second penalty this game. Last week, Robinson had three.
Finally, Buckner connects and registers a sack on 3rd and 4 to force the field goal. Dawson drills the 50-yard kick to tie the game 9-9 with 6:50 to go in the third quarter.
I have no idea how Hoyer is just walking around fine after his left knee bended in a very awkward fashion. Rookie C.J. Beathard came on for a play, but Hoyer was back on the field the next play.
This 49ers offense just cannot do anything — another drive and another field goal. Gould’s 48-yard field goal gives San Francisco the 12-9 lead with 2:22 left in the third quarter. That is the score we’ll have as the fourth quarter is set to begin.
Fourth Quarter
Buckner using that massive 6’7 frame to get the pass deflection on 3rd down, forcing the Cardinals to force the punt. Nice.
The defensive effort is all for naught, as the 49ers offense stalls and the punt unit is on. Arizona takes over at their own 25-yard line.
Eli Harold’s huge sack backed the Cardinals up to 2nd and 17, and it was the deciding factor that killed the Arizona drive that was gaining steam. Dawson’s 32-yard field goal is good, and we’re knotted up at 12-12 with 7:41 left in the fourth quarter.
Just like Gould, Dawson is 4-4 on field goals.
The two teams exchange drives, and now the 49ers have the ball back with a chance to win this game. Less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
Continuing the theme of the game, the San Francisco offense does nothing and the Cardinals will take over at their own 44-yard line.
It’s going to be 3rd and 10 after the two-minute mark, San Francisco ball at their own 23-yard line. And this offense is just horrendous right now — another punt and Arizona has the ball with 1:44 to play.
Elvis Dumveril with a HUGE fourth quarter. Two sacks in this period.
But the offense wastes another stellar effort and has to punt with 13 seconds let. This game is heading to overtime.
Overtime
The 49ers will receive the ball to open the overtime period.
Joe Staley just saved Hyde on the opening play as he recovered the running back’s fumble. A penalty on Patrick Peterson on 3rd and 4 extends San Francisco’s drive.
… And the 16-play drive results in another 49ers field goal. Gould’s 23-yard kick puts San Francisco up 15-12 with 2:25 left in overtime.
Cardinals just march down the field with ease on their possession, and are in field goal range with a little over a minute to play. And just like that, Larry Fitzgerald’s 19-yard touchdown wins the game in overtime.
The 49ers are now 0-4 on the season.
