Fantasy football: Waiver-wire players to watch in Week 3
By Jay Marsdale
Building a team through the waiver wire is crucial in fantasy football. Week 3 of the NFL season is here, so let’s find some players that are available in your league to help win the tough match ups once the bye weeks start.
September in the NFL is always a confusing month for fans and fantasy football player alike.
Everyone thinks they know what is going to happen to start the year, but no one ever really does. By Week 3 we have learned much more about teams and players. That extra information pays off when looking through the waiver wire.
Week 2 wasn’t as painful, injury wise, as Week 1, but there was still a ton learned about some interesting new player roles. Surprising breakout players are still to be had in many leagues and we are going to give you a few to consider.
San Francisco 49ers
First, let’s take a look back at last week’s results. Also, just a reminder that in order to be on this list, the player has to be owned in 40 percent of ESPN fantasy football leagues or less.
Week 2 Hits: Kendall Wright (CHI), Javorius Allen (BAL), and Marquise Lee/Allen Hurns (JAX)
Week 2 Misses: Andre Ellington (ARI) and Nelson Agholor (PHI)
Rashard Higgins (CLE)
Rashard Higgins topped his entire offensive output from last season in just one game in Week 2. Usually it would be difficult to trust a player like this, but in this case the production is real.
With the injury to top wide receiver and Browns teammate Corey Coleman, Higgins is in for extended playing time. In Week 2 he took advantage of this playing time to the tune of seven catches for 95 yards. Coleman is going to be out for quite a few weeks. Higgins is going to pick up those targets for Cleveland.
Browns quarterback DeShone Kizer has not developed a good connection with the other top receiver on the team, Kenny Britt. Coleman was Kizer’s favorite target to begin the season and Higgins has seemingly passed Britt already as well.
Higgins is only owned in 4.4 percent of ESPN leagues, which makes him readily available for nearly every fantasy football team. Not many players who scored nearly 17 fantasy points in Week 2 are that under-owned heading into Week 3. He is a solid add going into Week 3 with good upside.
The Browns are going to be playing from behind in many games this season and that means they will be forced to throw the ball. Any NFL receiver getting eleven targets a game is worthy of a spot on my bench. Especially with the NFL bye weeks fast approaching.
