Linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong

The 49ers miss linebacker Reuben Foster.

Foster, who missed Sunday’s action with a high-ankle sprain, has since been replaced by fellow linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong at the SAM spot within San Francisco’s defense.

It’s an obvious downgrade, as Armstrong’s 34.0 overall season grade, per Pro Football Focus, indicates.

Armstrong whiffed in coverage on a number of plays, including one — per the Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows — where Armstrong tried to make up for it with a tackle that eventually was flagged for a late hit out of bounds:

At one point, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh swapped out Armstrong with linebacker Brock Coyle, who is usually only a special teams contributor.

Overall, Armstrong saw 69 snaps during the game, but the Niners sure wish Foster was making plays in the fourth quarter rather than hoping Armstrong would fit the bill.
