San Francisco 49ers: Laying out the depth chart after roster cuts
By Peter Panacy
Cornerback
Starters: Rashard Robinson, Dontae Johnson
Nickel: K’Waun Williams
Backups: Ahkello Witherspoon, Keith Reaser
Cornerback is going to be an interesting position for San Francisco this season.
Rashard Robinson is slated to be the No. 1 corner heading into 2017. But he didn’t exactly have the best of preseasons, and the depth behind him isn’t much to speak of.
This is why I proposed, over at 49ers Webzone, the Niners consider moving safety Jimmie Ward back down to corner and letting rookie Lorenzo Jerome assume Ward’s free safety spot.
Doing so would take pressure of Robinson and ease the worry of having less-than-adequate depth behind this group.
Expect this group to be relatively fluid this upcoming season.
